Editor y promotor de la salud física. Huérfano a los 11 años y enfermizo, McFadden comenzó a desarrollar su fuerza física en la adolescencia como un acto de rebeldía. En 1899 comenzó a publicar la revista Physical Culture, en donde promovió sus ideas sobre ejercicios, dietas y ayunos. Se destacó por su incomparable pasión en fomentar la salud física de la mujer, desaprobaba el uso de corsés, zapatos de tacón y ropa incómoda. En las décadas siguientes construyó un imperio editorial, y sacó a la luz la primera revista de casos de la vida real, True Story (1919), seguida de True Romances (1923), True Detective Mystery Magazine (1925) y otras publicaciones periódicas. Sus intentos por alcanzar la presidencia, el senado estadounidense y el cargo de gobernador de Florida resultaron infructuosos. Bien conservado físicamente hasta su ancianidad, saltó en paracaídas sobre París el día que cumplió 84 años.
